Essential Oils are absorbed into the body in these in these 3 ways:
When essential oils are inhaled through the nose, tiny nerves send an immediate signal to the brain and go straight to work on the systems that moderate our minds and bodies.
Inhalation is the most effective method of these incredibly nurturing components in essential oils, since the chemical messengers in the nasal cavity have direct access to the brain. Diffusing essential oils is a perfect example of the above method.
When essential oils are applied to the skin, their healing components are absorbed into the bloodstream by the pores and hair follicles. Once inside the bloodstream, they disperse to the specific organs and systems on which they work. Applying essential oils to specific pulse points allows for quicker absorption. We suggest applying to the wrists, temples and back of the neck.
Studies show that taking essential oils internally is the least effective way to absorb their therapeutic properties. The oil ends up in the digestive tract where it has to pass through the stomach and small intestine before it reaches the bloodstream. It is not advised to take essential oils internally unless under the direct advice of a medical doctor who is also a Clinical Aromatherapist.
